Accident and Emmergency at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital
a&E
This department facilitates the platform for SHO's to exercise their knowledge across all disciplines and provides unique opportunity to enhance existing or develop new skills in the treatment of the acutely ill/trauma patient.

It is a busy department, well staffed and efficiently run, where team working is essential in the delivery of a proficient service. Staffs are helpful, professional and dedicated in their individual roles.

The department has 1 Consultant, 1 Associate Specialist, 4 Staff Grades (+ 1 part time), 4 Trust Grades, 4 F2, 3 GPVTS and 1 stand alone SHO post. Senior colleagues are experienced, approachable and supportive, providing good teaching when required. The unit is sufficiently equipped, well laid out with designated zones for majors, minors, paediatrics, and resuscitation.

In addition, there are 2 private consulting rooms, a small theatre for minor procedures, E-bed facility and the X-ray department is conveniently situated alongside A&E.

The academic programme consists of interactive teaching sessions on Monday mornings and SHO's have the opportunity to attend GP training on Wednesdays.

The shifts are 8 hours in duration and commence at 8h00, 11h00, and 14h 00 and16h00 respectively. Night shifts are 10 hours from 22h00 till 8h00. Annual leave is incorporated into the Rota and difficult to exchange with colleagues due to the complexity of the Rota.

Adjusting to a shift based Rota might prove challenging, but the nature of the work in this department can be stimulating, interesting and satisfying.
