Health Care of the Older Person at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital
This department has 5 elderly care consultants and 4 middle grade doctors with 6 SHOs (of whom 2 are GPVTS trainees) covering the rehabilitation wards. The V.T. Scheme trainees are based out of St Augustine's ward which is a stroke unit with rehabilitation patients. There are two consultants, one middle grade doctor & two SHOs who take care of that ward, one of whom deals with CVA and the other who deals with elderly medicine / rehab.
The SHOs are expected to attend the tutorials which are held twice weekly on Tuesday & Thursday lunch times. In addition the VTS trainees are released for the Wednesday afternoon GPVTS teaching.
During your stay you are expected to attend two to three clinics in a week which will be either with the stroke consultant or haematology, dermatology or diabetic clinics. Each consultant holds a weekly ward round, one on Wednesday and the other on Thursday morning.
The VTS SHO is part of the on call rota, which covers both acute medicine and Care of the Elderly. At present the on call is limited to a once weekly late shift between 17.00 - 22.00 hrs, a weekend rota of 1 in 16, and one week of nights.
This is a busy but friendly department
