Women’s health at QEQM Hospital provides excellent experience in various aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The department has nine consultants, nine registrars and 7 Senior House Officers in addition to 2 Foundation year two doctors and one Foundation year one doctor. It is a very friendly team with a wide range of clinical activities.
Obstetrics services provided include community midwifery, ante-natal clinics, foetal medicine clinics, day foetal assessment centre, high risk pregnancy unit, Doppler clinics, sub-fertility clinics as well as labour and ante-natal wards.
The gynaecological service includes general outpatient clinics, colposcopy, menstrual assessment clinics, uro-gynaecology clinic, early pregnancy assessment unit, gynae-oncology clinics, rapid access clinics and gynaecology emergency services.
The Senior House Officer post is covered as a full shift system (band 1a). As an SHO on the V.T.Scheme you may be allocated to any firm, often under the supervision of Mr. Okorocha, Mr. N.Rafla (Infertility medicine) or Mr. M.Ferrugia (Minimal access surgeon). There is a separate on call rota for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This division has made the on call work much less stressful. Obstetrics on call includes four long day weekday on calls (Monday to Thursday 08:00-20:30hrs), and three weekend day on calls (Friday to Sunday 08:00-20:30hrs). Night-time on call includes four nights (Monday to Thursday 20:00-08:00hrs) and three weekend nights (Friday to Sunday 20:00-08:30hrs). Gynaecology on calls will be covered during your normal working hours. (Monday to Friday 8.30-17.00hrs)
There is regular departmental teaching. On Tuesdays there are both lunch time meetings and multi-disciplinary meetings, on Thursday lunch time there are CTG meetings; on Friday both Specialist registrar teaching and Peri-natal morbidity and mortality meetings. There is a monthly ‘skills and drills’ course.
Women’s health is both friendly and offers a wide range of clinical activities. You can be sure that your posting will be a pleasant and memorable one.
